If you question your digital habits, it might be time to reflect on the following symptom parameters for self-diagnosis. Before listing these parameters, let me define what I mean by digital addiction. Simply put, digital addiction manifests itself as poor impulse control in the realm of digital consumption, encompassing the excessive use of smartphones, gaming devices, social media platforms, and other digital products.

Now, let me explore the symptoms that could indicate a digital addiction is present.

  1. Constantly Checking Social Media: Are you incessantly refreshing your social media pages to monitor likes and comments? This behaviour may be a red flag.
  2. Pointless Scrolling: Do you mindlessly scroll through social media platforms without any specific purpose or goal? This aimless scrolling is often a symptom of digital addiction.
  3. Excessive Screen Time: Are you spending an unreasonable amount of time glued to screens, be it on your smartphone, computer, or other digital devices? Excessive screen time is a key indicator.
  4. Inability to Disconnect: Do you struggle to disconnect from the digital world, even when it’s necessary? The inability to step away may signal a dependence on digital engagement. In other words, do you feel naked without your digital device? This is another red flag.
  5. Decline in Productivity: Have you noticed a decline in your productivity due to digital fatigue? If your digital activities negatively impact your efficiency, it’s time to look closer.
  6. Constant Multitasking: Are you constantly juggling between various digital devices, trying to manage multiple tasks simultaneously? This habit may indicate a lack of focus and potential digital overstimulation.
  7. Preference for Online Relationships: Do you favour online relationships over physical ones? Choosing digital connections over face-to-face interactions could be a sign of underlying digital addiction.
  8. Are you happier:( more flow of dopamine) when interacting with your digital device than not? This is another key indicator.

If you recognise the presence of most of these symptoms in your life, it’s crucial to acknowledge that you may be in the realm of digital addiction.

Recognising the issue is the first step towards seeking a remedy. Consider taking proactive measures to regain control over your digital habits, whether it involves setting usage limits, practising digital detox( time without digital connection), or seeking professional guidance.

Remember, a healthy relationship with technology is essential for overall well-being, and addressing digital addiction can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.

In the age of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and video games, we are subject to an unprecedented digital onslaught, which, if we don’t manage by establishing healthy connectivity boundaries, our mental and physical well-being and professional productivity will be seriously affected.
